Former NHL defenseman Bryan Marchment passes away at age 53

Former National Hockey League defenseman Bryan Marchment of Scarborough, Ontario has passed away at the age of 53 on Wednesday according to Ben Shelley of hockeybuzz.com. A 17-year veteran, Marchment played for the Winnipeg Jets, Chicago Blackhawks, Hartford Whalers, Edmonton Oilers, Tampa Bay Lightning, San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames from 1988 to 2006.

At the time of his death, Bryan Marchment was in Montreal, Quebec for the 2022 National Hockey League Draft according to the Associated Press. He was working as a scout for the Sharks, as the NHL Draft is set to begin on Thursday.

In 926 games, Marchment had 40 goals and 142 assists for 182 points. He was a +31 with 2307 penalty minutes, 23 power-play points, eight shorthanded points, five game-winning goals, and 947 shots on goal.

Marchment’s best NHL season came in 2001-02 with the Sharks. That year he had career-highs in assists (20) and points (22).

Known as one of the NHL’s elite enforcers, he had a career-high 313 penalty minutes with the Blackhawks in 1992-93. He played hockey in an era where there was more room for enforcers than there are today.

Bryan Marchment’s son Mason is a left winger for the Florida Panthers. This past season, Mason Marchment had 18 goals and 29 assists for 47 points in 54 games.
