Former Canucks right winger Gino Odjick dies at age 52

Former Vancouver Canucks right winger Gino Odjick of Maniwaki, Quebec passed away on Sunday at the age of 52 according to the Canadian Press. Odjick spent eight seasons with the Canucks from 1990 to 1998. He was also with the New York Islanders for three seasons from 1998 to 2000, the Philadelphia Flyers for two seasons from 2000 to 2001, and the Montreal Canadiens for two seasons from 2001 to 2002.

In 605 games, Odjick had 64 goals and 73 assists for 137 points. He was a -21 with 2567 penalty minutes, 11 power-play points, 13 game-winning goals and 753 shots on goal.

Known as one of the National Hockey League’s top enforcers in the 1990s, Odjick eclipsed 300 penalty minutes in a season thrice. He had 348 penalty minutes in 1991-92, 370 penalty minutes in 1992-93, and a NHL-high 371 penalty minutes in 1996-97. Odjick was in fact the Canucks all-time penalty minute leader with 2127 penalty minutes.

Despite his 2567 career penalty minutes, Odjick in fact scored a goal on one penalty shot in his career. It came in a 5-2 Canucks win over the Calgary Flames on October 19, 1991.

In the postseason, Odjick had four goals and one assist for five points in 44 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He was a -7 with 142 penalty minutes, two game-winning goals and 33 shots on goal. Odjick scored the playoff game-winning goals on April 18, 1996 in a 5-4 Canucks win over the Colorado Avalanche and on April 22, 1996 in a 4-3 Vancouver win over Colorado.
