According to Salim Valji of TSN on Thursday, the Calgary Flames have signed defenseman Tyson Barrie of Victoria, British Columbia. The terms of the contract are for one year, and $1.25 million.
Barrie is joining his fifth National Hockey League franchise. He previously played eight seasons with the Colorado Avalanche from 2011 to 2019, one season with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2019 to 2020, three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers from 2020 to 2023, and two seasons with the Nashville Predators from 2023 to 2024.
This past season, Barrie had one goal and 14 assists for 15 points in 41 games. He was a -10 with 16 penalty minutes, six power-play points, 65 shots on goal, 47 blocked shots, 14 hits, five takeaways and 18 giveaways.
Barrie’s lone goal this past season came on December 15. He scored from Philip Tomasino of Mississauga, Ontario and Cole Smith in a 6-5 Predators win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Barrie’s goal came at 10:18 of the second period, and at the time pulled the Predators within a goal, at 5-4 Carolina.
One strength of Barrie’s game is on the powerplay. Why he is an elite defenseman is because he does an excellent job of keeping the puck in the zone. Expectations are not very high for the Flames this season, however one notable person I spoke to in the Calgary hockey community this past week guaranteed to me that he Flames would make the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season.
