
Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec not only won once, but twice on Wednesday at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Auger-Aliassime beat Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the third round of men’s singles, 6-3. 7-6, and then teamed up with Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa, Ontario to beat the American duo of Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz, 7-6, 3-6, [10-8], in the quarterfinals of mixed doubles.
This was the first time in eight matches that Auger-Aliassime has beaten Medvedev. Next up for Auger-Aliassime is world number nine Casper Ruud of Norway in the quarterfinals. Auger-Aliassime has beaten Ruud twice in five opportunities. Auger-Aliassime beat Ruud 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the 2019 Miami Open, and then 6-4, 7-5 in the fourth round of the 2024 Madrid Open.
Auger-Aliassime was responsible in delivering two upsets on Wednesday too. The Canadian was seeded 13th, while Medvedev was fourth in men’s singles. Meanwhile in mixed doubles tennis, Auger-Aliassime and Dabrowski were unseeded, while Fritz and Paul were seeded third.
Next up for Auger-Aliassime and Dabrowski in the semifinals in mixed doubles action are Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic. The other semifinal features Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands versus Xin Wang and Zhizhen Zhang of China. Remember, if Auger-Aliassime and Dabrowski lose in the semifinals, they are not eliminated. They will stay play one more match for bronze.
