According to Rogers Sportsnet on Saturday, Edmonton will host the 2023 Heritage Classic. The game will feature the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium, the home stadium of the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League.

This will be the second time that Commonwealth Stadium will have hosted a Heritage Classic. They in fact hosted the first Heritage Classic game on November 22, 2003. The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Oilers 4-3 in front of 57, 167 spectators.

The Flames have been involved in two Heritage Classics. They defeated the Canadiens 4-0 at McMahon Stadium on February 20, 2011, and lost 2-1 to the Winnipeg Jets at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan on October 26, 2019. Regina, was a neutral site, located between Calgary and Winnipeg, is the capital city of Saskatchewan, and hosts the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Oilers also played in the 2016 Heritage Classic. There, the Oilers beat the Jets 3-0 at Winnipeg’s Investors Group Field, home of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.

On Saturday, the Flames came through with a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks. With the victory, they improved to a record of 18 wins, 13 regulation losses, and seven losses in extra time for 43 points. That is good enough for third place at the moment in the Pacific Division.
