For the third time in Denis Shapovalov’s tennis career, he has won an ATP tournament. On Sunday, Shapovalov won the 2025 Dallas Open by stunning Norwegian Casper Ruud in the final, 7-6, 6-3. The title for Shapovalov is the first time he has won an ATP 500 event, as his two previous titles (the 2019 Stockholm Open and the 2024 Belgrade Open) were 250 events.
Shapovalov beat Ruud, the second seed, 7-5 in the first set tiebreak. The serve was a key statistic in the match as Shapovalov had 13 aces compared to five for Ruud. Shapovalov had five break point opportunities and broke Ruud once in the second set. Ruud never broke Shapovalov in the final.
The win was significant for Shapovalov as he beat a grand slam finalist and a player ranked fifth in the world. Ruud reached the final of the 2022 United States Open, and the final of the French Open in back-to-back years in 2022 and 2023. Shapovalov’s best grand slam result was reaching the semifinals in Wimbledon in 2021.
Shapovalov also made a gigantic leap in the ATP World Rankings. He is now ranked 32nd in the world after being ranked 54th. That was a leap of 22 places. It was the third largest leap this past week for players currently ranked inside the top 100. Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina moved 23 places (110th to 87th) after winning a challenger event in Argentina over the last week. Meanwhile, Mattia Bellucci of Italy moved up 24 places (92nd to 68th) after reaching the semifinals of Rotterdam on Saturday.
