Corey Conners in contention at the Charles Schwab Challenge

Golf is back, as the PGA Tour is in full swing this week after a three-month absence due to coronavirus. After 54 holes at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, Corey Conners of Listowell, Ontario is at -10 and three strokes back of the leader, Xander Schauffele of La Jolla, California.

Conners is currently tied for ninth place with three major winners. They are 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship winner, 2011 U.S. Open champion and 2014 British Open champion Rory McIlroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland, 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed of San Antonio, Texas, and 2013 U.S. Open champion Justin Reed of London, England. Others at -10 are Abraham Ancer of Mexico and Bryson DeChambeau of Modesto, California.

Schauffele currently leads five golfers by one stroke. In those five are three other major winners. They are 2019 U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland of Topeka, Kansas, 2017 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas of Louisville, Kentucky along with 2015 Masters and U.S. Open champion and 2017 British Open champion Jordan Spieth of nearby Dallas, Texas. The other golfers at -12 are Branden Grace of Pretoria, South Africa, and Collin Morikawa of Los Angeles, California. Those at -11 are Daniel Beger of Plantation, Florida, and Harold Varner III of Akron, Ohio.

In the three rounds of golf so far, Conners shot -4 in the first round, -3 in the second round, and then -3 in the third round. On Thursday, he had six birdies, but also double-bogeyed the 13th hole. On Friday, Conners had a string of three consecutive birdies from the 10th to the 12th holes. Then on Saturday, he birdied the second, third, seventh, 11th and 16th holes, and bogeyed the sixth and ninth holes.
