Connor McDavid wins 2022 Art Ross Trophy

Edmonton Oilers centre Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario has won the 2022 Art Ross Trophy on Sunday following the end of the 2022 NHL season. The award is presented to the National Hockey League regular season leader in points.

McDavid had 123 points, a career-high. In 80 games, the Oilers captain had 44 goals and 79 assists. McDavid’s previous career high was 116 points in 2018-19. Five years ago he had 41 goals and 75 assists.

McDavid won the Art Ross Trophy by eight points over Florida Panthers left winger Jonathan Huberdeau of Saint-Jerome, Quebec and Calgary Flames left winger Johnny Gaudreau. Huberdeau had 30 goals and 85 assists for 115 points. Gaudreau had 40 goals and 75 assists for 115 points.

This was the fourth time that McDavid has won the Art Ross Trophy in his career. He previously had 100 points in 2016-17, 108 points in 2017-18, and 105 points in 2020-21. The year McDavid had 116 points in 2018-19, he did not lead the NHL in points. Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Conn Smythe Trophy that year with 128 points.

In addition to having 44 goals and 79 assists for 123 points this season, McDavid was a +28 with 45 penalty minutes, 44 power-play points, nine game-winning goals, one shorthanded point, 314 shots on goal, 562 faceoff wins, 26 blocked shots, 75 hits, 73 takeaways, and 68 giveaways. McDavid also had career highs this season in goals, assists, plus/minus, power-play points, shots on goal, faceoff wins, and hits.

Another player on a Canadian team won an award on Sunday. Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy. Matthews had a NHL-leading 60 goals.
