Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario had a dominant performance for the ages on Sunday. Andreescu defeated Danielle Collins of the United States 6-1, 6-1 in the second round of the 2022 Madrid Masters.
It was simply a fantastic performance by Andreescu and a dreadful one for Collins, the 2019 Australian Open semifinalist, 2022 Australian Open finalist, and eighth ranked player in the world. The biggest difference in the match were the points won on second serve. Andreescu won 71% of her points, while Collins only won 37% of her points. During Collins’s second serve, she had six double faults.
Andreescu simply had a lot of strong looks while Collins was serving. This led to 10 break point opportunities, of which Andreescu capitalized on six of them.
Collins was the second American Andreescu has beaten at the 2022 Madrid Masters. In the first round, Andreescu beat Alison Riske, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0. In the third round on Tuesday, Andreescu will be facing another American, Jessica Pegula of Buffalo. Head-to-head, Andreescu has not faced Pegula on the WTA Tour, but did beat her one time 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the final of Newport Beach, California, which is an event part of women’s tennis’s challenger series.
The last time Andreescu beat a top-10 player was the 2019 United States Open. At that time she beat another American in Serena Williams, 6-3, 7-5, in the final.
Andreescu is one of three Canadians left in the Madrid Masters. Denis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario will be facing Andy Murray of Great Britain in the second round on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Felix Auger-Aliassme of Montreal, Quebec will be facing either Frances Tiafoe of the United States or Cristin Garin of Chile on Wednesday in the second round.
