Edmonton Oilers centre Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario scored his second National Hockey League Stanley Cup Playoff overtime winner on Thursday. He accomplished the feat in a 3-2 Oilers win over the Dallas Stars at the 32 second mark of double overtime in game one of the Western Conference Final. With the win, the Oilers lead the Stars in the best out of seven series one game to none.
The Oilers captain scored on an all-Canadian goal. Evan Bouchard of Oakville, Ontario and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of Burnaby, British Columbia had the assists.
McDavid was one of two Canadian Oilers with a multi-point game in game one. The other was Zach Hyman of Toronto, Ontario. McDavid and Hyman both had one goal and one assist for two points. The other Oilers goal scorer was Leon Draisaitl.
McDavid’s first Stanley Cup Playoff overtime winner came on May 26, 2022. He scored from Draisaitl in a 5-4 Oilers win over the Calgary Flames at 5:03 of extra time. The Oilers win closed out the series, as Edmonton won the 2022 Western Conference semifinal series four games to one.
In the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, McDavid has three goals and 20 assists for 23 points. He is a +7 with eight penalty minutes, one power-play goal, one game-winning goal, 36 shots on goal, 82 faceoff wins, nine blocked shots, 27 hits, 11 takeaways and seven giveaways. McDavid’s postseason power-play goal came on April 26 in game three of the first round against the Los Angeles Kings. The Oilers won 6-1. McDavid put the Oilers up 3-0 at 18:34 of the first period. Bouchard and Draisaitl had the assists.
