Cody Fournie wins Paralympic gold in men’s 200 metre wheelchair racing

Team Canada won its second gold medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. On Tuesday, it was in dominant fashion. Cody Fournie of Victoria, British Columbia placed first in the men’s 200 metres wheelchair racing with the T51 classification.

Fournie had a personal best time of 37.64 seconds. Tony Piispanen of Finland won the silver medal with a time of 38.55 seconds. Peter Genyn of Belgium won the bronze medal with a time of 38.65 seconds. Fournie reached the podium by 3.27 seconds. Mohamed Berrahal of Algeria finished in fourth place with a time of 40.91 seconds.

Team Canada won one other medal on Tuesday. Katie Cosgriffe of Burlington, Ontario won bronze in the women’s 100 metre butterfly S10 classification. Cosgriffe, who suffers from the neurological disorder of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, had a time of 1:07.22. Faye Rogers of Great Britain won the gold medal with a time of 1:05.84. Callie-Ann Warrington of Great Britain won the silver medal with a time of 1:06.41. Cosgriffe reached the podium by 0.13 seconds over Jasmine Greenwood of Australia. Greenwood had a time of 1:07.35.

Meanwhile, in men’s wheelchair basketball, Canada won its quarterfinal match. Patrick Anderson of Edmonton, Alberta led Canada with 20 points as Canada beat the Netherlands 79-67. It was a dominant second quarter for Canada as they outscored the Netherlands 26-10. Canada will next play the United States in the semifinal on Thursday. Great Britain will play Germany in the other semifinal.

Canada now has won 13 Paralympic medals. They have won two gold medals, four silver medals, and seven bronze medals.
