Claire Thompson named PWHL First Star of the Week

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Claire Thompson of Toronto, Ontario has been named the Professional Women’s Hockey League first star of the week for the week between December 16 to 22. In two games, Thompson who is a defenseman for the Minnesota Frost, had one goal and four assists for five points with four shots on goal.

Thompson had one goal and three assists for four points in a 5-2 Frost win over the Ottawa Charge on Thursday. The four points tied a Professional Women’s Hockey League record for most points in a game. The only other player to accomplish the feat was Canadian Olympic gold medalist Erin Ambrose of Keswick, Ontario, who had four assists in a 4-3 Montreal win over Minnesota on April 18. Thompson then finished the week with one assist in a 4-3 Minnesota win over New York on Sunday.

In five games this season, Thompson has one goal and six assists for seven points in five games. She is a +2 with 10 shots on goal. The goal came from Taylor Heise and Brooke Bryant with four minutes and 54 seconds left in the third period against Ottawa on Thursday. The goal put Minnesota up 4-2.

With the wins, the Frost are in first place in the PWHL standings with 12 points (three regulation wins, one win in extra time, and one loss in extra time). Thompson and Ambrose won an Olympic gold in women’s hockey at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
