Nova Scotia’s Christina Black of Sydney is in the semifinals of the 2025 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Thunder Bay, Ontario. In two knockout games, Black defeated Corryn Brown of British Columbia 10-5 in the page 3/4 qualifier on Friday night, and then Alberta’s Kayla Skrlik 8-7 on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinal.

You could make the argument that this is the best women’s curling team to come out of Nova Scotia since Colleen Jones’s dynasty over two decades ago. Jones of Halifax won the 2001 Women’s World Curling Championship in Lausanne, Switzerland and the 2004 Women’s World Curling Championship in Gavle, Sweden, along with six Scotties. Since Jones last won the Scotties in 2004 in Red Deer, Alberta, Nova Scotia has finished third at three Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Jones was third at the 2006 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in London, Ontario, Heather Smith-Dacey of Fall River was third at the 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Charlottetown. Prince Edward, and Mary-Anne Arsenault of Halifax (former second for Jones) was third at the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Penticton, British Columbia. The fact that Black is ranked fourth in Canada is very significant indeed.

Black will now play the loser of Saturday night’s 1-2 game between Team Canada’s Rachel Homan and Manitoba’s Kerri Einarson in Sunday’s semifinal. The winner of Saturday’s semifinal goes to Sunday’s final.
