Carleton University won the 2024 Canadian USport Women’s National Basketball Championship at the Saville Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. It was the third USport Women’s National Basketball Championship title for the Carleton University Ravens as they previously won in 2018 and 2023.
In the women’s championship final, the Ravens beat the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in a tight matchup 70-67. Four Ravens reached double digits in scoring. They were guard Kali Pocrnic of Oakville, Ontario (18 points), guard Tatyanna Burke of Winona, Ontario (14 points), guard Dorcas Buisa of Gatineau, Quebec (11 points), and Teresa Donato of Ottawa, Ontario (10 points). Forward Jacqueline Urban of Ancaster, Ontario led the Ravens with 13 rebounds, and guard Kyana-Jane Poulin of St-Bruno, Quebec led the Ravens with four steals and four assists.
The Ravens entered the National Championship in Edmonton as the second seed. They were only behind the top ranked Huskies. In the quarterfinals, the Ravens defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Crusades 75-58, and then in the semifinals, the Ravens defeated the Queen’s University Golden Gaels 74-40.
This was an interesting year in Canadian university basketball. That is because the Carleton women’s basketball program was victorious the same year the Carleton men’s national program failed to make the national championship for the first year since 2002. In that time, the Ravens’s men’s program won 17 times. Meanwhile in other Canadian university women’s basketball news, Jayda Veinot of Port Williams, Nova Scotia was named the 2024 Nan Copp Trophy winner, presented to the most outstanding player. This past season with the University of New Brunswick, Veinot averaged 21.3 points per game.
