Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon named NHL first star of the week

According to the National Hockey League on Monday, Colorado Avalanche centre Nathan MacKinnon of Halifax, Nova Scotia has been named the NHL First Star of the Week for the week from March 4-10, 2024. In three games, he had three goals and seven assists for 10 points. MacKinnon led all players this past week in assists and points.

MacKinnon was also a +7 with three power-play points, one game-winning goal, 20 shots on goal, one blocked shot, one hit, and 29 faceoff wins. He began the week with two goals and two assists for four points in a 5-0 Avalanche shutout win over the Chicago Blackhawks on March 4. It was in Colorado’s shutout win over Chicago that MacKinnon had the game-winning goal. MacKinnon scored from Devon Toews of Abbotsford, British Columbia and Cale Makar of Calgary, Alberta on an all-Canadian goal. He then had one goal and three assists for four points in a 7-2 Colorado win over the Detroit Red Wings on March 6, and two assists in a 2-1 Avalanche win over the Minnesota Wild on March 8.

On the season, MacKinnon leads the NHL with 111 points. He also has 40 goals, 71 assists, is a +25 with 34 penalty minutes, 39 power-play points, eight game-winning goals, 316 shots on goal, 480 faceoff wins, 564 blocked shots, 49 hits, 32 takeaways, and 65 giveaways.

The Avalanche are in third place in the Central Division. They have 85 points.
