Canada wins silver in women’s World Cup rugby sevens in Dubai

Team Canada won the silver medal on Saturday in a women’s World Cup rugby sevens competition in Dubai. Canada had a record of four wins and one loss until the championship game where they lost 17-14 to New Zealand in a nail biter. The United States beat Australia 24-7 in the bronze medal game.

In pool A, Canada defeated Russia 24-19 and Brazil 43-0 before losing 34-10 to the United States. In Canada’s win over Russia, Canada got two tries in the first four minutes from Bianca Farella of Montreal, Quebec. In Canada’s romp over Brazil, Farella led Canada again with two tries.

Canada then got to play in the quarterfinals where they beat France 19-7. Karen Paquin of Quebec City, Quebec led Canada in this match with two tries. Then in the semifinal, Canada put together a great performance against rugby powerhouse Australia with a 26-12 win. In the semifinal against the Aussies, the reigning Olympic gold medalists, Ghislaine Landry of Toronto, Ontario recorded two tries and three conversions in registering 16 points for Team Canada.

This was the second women’s rugby sevens tournament of 2019-20. The first was in Glendale, Colorado and won by the United States on October 6. Canada is in fourth place in the Women’s Rugby Sevens World Cup standings with 28 points. New Zealand and the United States are tied for first with 36 points. The silver medal for Canada will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
