Canada wins silver in swimming and athletics at 2024 Paralympic Games

Team Canada won two more silver medals at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris on Sunday. The second place finishes came in the sports of athletics and swimming.

In athletics, 44-year-old Brent Lakatos of Dorval, Quebec won the silver medal in the men’s 400 metre wheelchair racing event. Lakatos’s silver medal was in the T53 classification. Pongsakorn Paeyo of Thailand won the gold medal with a time of 46.77 seconds. Lakatos’s silver medal time had 47.24 seconds. Brian Siemann of the United States had a bronze medal winning time of 47.84 seconds. Lakatos reached the podium by 1.38 seconds over Pichet Krungget of Thailand, who had a fourth place finish of 48.62 seconds. Lakatos has now won 12 Paralympic medals (one gold medal, nine silver medals and two bronze medals).

In swimming, Aurelie Rivard of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec won the silver medal in the women’s 100 metre freestyle swimming event in the S10 classification with a time of 1:00.82. Emeline Pierre of France won the gold medal with a time of 1:00.49. Alessia Scortechini of Italy won the bronze medal with a time of 1:01.02. Rivard reached the podium by 0.28 seconds Callie-Ann Warrington of Great Britain finished in fourth place with a time of 1:01.10. This is Rivard’s 12th Paralympic medal too. She has won five gold medals, four silver medals and three bronze medals.

Finally in women’s wheelchair basketball, Canada trounced Spain 81-49. Kady Dandeneau of North Pender Island, British Columbia led Canada with 36 points. Canada finished second in Group A with a record of two wins and one loss. Canada has now won eight medals (four silver medals and four bronze medals).
