Alysha Newman wins Diamond League bronze in Italy

Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Alysha Newman of London, Ontario won the bronze medal in a Diamond League event in Rome, Italy on Friday. For Newman it was her sixth career Diamond League medal and second of the season.

Newman had a vault of 4.73 metres. Nina Kennedy of Australia won the gold medal with a vault of 4.83 metres. Sandi Morris of the United States won the silver medal with a vault of 4.83 metres as well. Kennedy won the gold medal because by the time she reached 4.83 metres. she had one bar down, while Morris had three. Newman reached the podium by one tenth of a metre. Eliza McCartney of New Zealand finished in fourth place with a vault of 4.63 metres.

This was the sixth of seven women’s pole vault events on the Diamond League schedule. The seventh event will be in Zurich, Switzerland on Wednesday. Newman won silver in London, England on July 20.

Newman is in fourth place in the Diamond League standings with 18 points. Kennedy leads with 31 points. Angelica Moser of Switzerland and Molly Caudery of Great Britain are tied for second place with 20 points.

Newman won the bronze medal in women’s pole vault at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The bronze medal in Rome will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
