Team Canada has won its first game of the 2022 Women’s World Volleyball Championships, which are co-hosted by the Netherlands and Poland. On Thursday from Lodz, Poland, Canada beat Kazakhstan 25-14, 25-16, 25-11.

This was Canada’s first win after two prior losses to Serbia and the United States in the Netherlands. On Sunday from Arnhem, Netherlands, Serbia beat Canada 25-23, 25-16, 25-20. On Monday from Arnhem, the United States beat Canada 25-19, 26-24, 25-15.

In Canada’s win over Kazakhstan, opposite hitter Kiera Van Ryk of New Westminster, British Columbia led Canada with 18 points, with all 18 points coming from the attack. Opposite hitter Hilary Howe of Calgary, Alberta had 12 points, and middle blocker Emily Maglio of Cranbrook, British Columbia had 11 points. Maglio led Canada with four blocks, while five Canadians had a single ace to lead the team. They were Howe, Maglio, opposite hitter Vicky Savard of Jonquiere, Quebec, middle blocker Jazmine White of Oshawa, Ontario, and opposite hitter Caroline Livingston of Kelowna, British Columbia. Livingston had a very impressive ace as it caught the line and fooled the Kazakhstani team which let the ball drop, hoping the volleyball would bounce out.

Team Canada next plays Bulgaria on Friday. This is a gigantic contest, as with a win, Canada has a legitimate chance of making the next stage of the tournament.
