The Toronto Blue Jays have qualified for the 2022 Major League Baseball playoffs. On Thursday Toronto qualified for one of the three wildcard spots in the American League after the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 at Fenway Park.

The Orioles and Red Sox were tied at three runs apiece in the eighth inning when J.D. Martinez hit a two-run home run off of Orioles relief pitcher Dillon Tate. It was one of two extra base hits for Martinez in the contest as he also notched his 43rd double of the year.

The Blue Jays qualified for the postseason with a record of 87 wins and 69 losses. It should be noted that the Blue Jays had a record of 91 wins and 71 losses in 2021, and did not make the playoffs. Even if the Blue Jays lose their last six games of the season to the Red Sox and Orioles, they will still be postseason bound.

So far eight teams have qualified for the playoffs. The Blue Jays are joined by the New York Mets, Cleveland Guardians, Atlanta Braves, Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and St. Louis Cardinals. Four more teams are still to be determined. The Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners are battling for two American League wildcard spots. The San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies are battling for two National League wildcard spots.
