Canada wins five medals at World Cup Short Track Speed Skating event in Montreal

Team Canada came away with five medals this past weekend at a World Cup short track speed skating event in Montreal, Quebec. Team Canada won gold medals in the men’s and women’s relay events. Meanwhile, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Steven Dubois of Laval, Quebec won the silver medal in the men’s 1000 metres on Saturday, Felix Roussel of Sherbrooke, Quebec won the silver medal in the men’s 500 metre event on Sunday, and William Dandjinou of Sherbrooke won the silver medal in the men’s 1000 metres on Sunday.

The Canadian team that won gold in the men’s 5000 metre relay was comprised of Dandjinou, Dubois, Canadian Olympic gold medalists Pascal Dion of Montreal, Quebec and Jordan Pierre Gilles of Sherbrooke. Canada had a winning time of 6:55.656. South Korea won the silver medal with a time of 6:55.895. Japan won the bronze medal with a time of 6:58.854. Canada reached the podium by 15.645 seconds over China, who finished in fourth place with a time of 7:11.301.

The Canadian team that won gold in the women’s 3000 metre relay comprised of Danae Blais of Chateauguay, Quebec, Florence Brunelle of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Courtney Sarault of Moncton, New Brunswick, and Renee Marie Steenge of Etobicoke, Ontario. Canada had a first place time of 4:07.935. The United States won the silver medal with a time of 4:07.948. The Netherlands won the bronze medal with a time of 4:07.980. Canada reached the podium by 10.784 seconds over South Korea, who had a fourth place time of 4:18.719.

Dubois had a time of 1:24.916. Ji Won Park of South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 1:24.903. Pietro Sighel of Italy won the bronze medal with a time of 1:25.035. Dubois won the medal by .297 seconds over Roberts Kruzbergs of Latvia, who had a time of 1:25.213. Dandjinou had a time of 1:26.964. Gun Woo Kim of South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 1:26.712. Luca Spechenhauser of Italy won the silver medal with a time of 1:26.774. Dandjinou reached the podium by 8.028 seconds over Park, who had a fourth place time of 1:34.992. In the men’s 1000 metre World Cup short track speed skating standings, Dubois is in second place with 160 points and Dandjinou is in third place with 154 points. Park leads with 195 points.

In the men’s 500 metres, Roussel won the silver medal with a time of 40.895 seconds. Shaoang Liu of China won the gold medal with a time of 40.875 seconds. Quentin Fercoq of France won the bronze medal with a time of 41.134 seconds.

Dubois, Gilles and Dion won a gold medal in the men’s 5000 metre short track speed skating relay at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. The medals in Montreal for Dubois, Gilles, Dion, Roussel, Dandjinou, Blais, Brunelle, Sarault, Steenge, will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
