Team Canada won the Olympic bronze medal in mixed doubles tennis on Friday at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The Canadian team was comprised of Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa, Ontario, and Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec.
Dabrowski and Auger-Aliassime won the bronze medal game on Friday by beating Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands 6-3, 7-6. It was a dominant tie break in the second set for Dabrowski and Auger-Aliassime, and in the process won the tie-break 7-2.
It should be noted that Dabrowski is a doubles specialist. She has won the 2017 French Open in mixed doubles, the 2018 Australian Open in mixed doubles, and the 2023 United States Open in women’s doubles.
The fact Dabrowski and Auger-Aliassime got the win was impressive when you consider the fact how much tennis Auger-Aliassime has played lately. In addition to playing the bronze medal game in mixed doubles tennis, Auger-Aliassime will play the Olympic bronze medal game against Lorenzo Musetti of Italy as well.
Both Musetti and Auger-Aliassime are grand slam semifinalists. Musetti made the final four of Wimbledon in 2024, and Auger-Aliassime made the semifinals of the United States Open in 2021. Auger-Aliassime has won three of five matches against Musetti. He beat Musetti 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the second round of Barcelona in 2021, 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals of Florence in 2022, and 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals of the Davis Cup in 2022.
Only once before has Canada won an Olympic medal in tennis. Daniel Nestor of Toronto, Ontario and Sebastian Lareau won men’s doubles gold at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
