
Team Canada has improved to a record two wins and zero losses at the 2023 Winter Universiade in Lake Placid, New York. On Friday, Canada trounced Sweden 10-2. Their first win of the tournament was on Thursday when they beat Ukraine 6-1.
University of Manitoba right winger Brett Davis of Oakbank, Manitoba registered the hat trick. He was one of three Canadians with three points. The others were St. Francis Xavier University center Liam Hawel of Arnprior, Ontario (two goals and one assist), and University of Saskatchewan right winger Jared Dmytriw of Craven, Saskatchewan (one goal and two assists).
Davis and Hawel were both drafted by the Dallas Stars in the 2017 National Hockey League Entry Draft. Hawel was selected in the fourth round, 101st overall. Davis was selected in the sixth round, 163rd overall.
One more Canadian player had a multi-point game. That was University of Quebec Trois-Rivieres defenseman Justin Bergeron of Magog, Quebec. The other four Canadian goal scorers were Queens University defenseman Jacob Paquette of Ottawa, Ontario, Concordia University center Tyler Hylland of Chateauguay, Quebec, University of Prince Edward Island right winger T.J. Shea of Tignish, Prince Edward Island, and St. Mary’s University center Andrew Coxhead of Bedford, Nova Scotia. Canada next plays on Sunday against Japan.
