Cynthia Appiah of Toronto, Ontario won a bronze medal on Saturday at a World Cup women’s monobob event in Altenberg, Germany. For Appiah, it was her sixth World Cup medal, as she has won three World Cup medals in women’s monobob, and three World Cup medals in two-woman bobsled. Appiah has made the smooth transition from an effective brakewoman to an effective driver in the sport of bobsled.
Appiah posted a two-run time of 1:58.86 on Saturday. Kaillie Humphries of the United States won the gold medal with a time of 1:57.92. Laura Nolte of Germany won the silver medal with a time of 1:58.47. Appiah earned a medal by 0.06 seconds over Lisa Buckwitz of Germany, who had a fourth place time of 1:58.92.
Appiah is now in fourth place in the World Cup women’s monobob standings with 922 points. Humphries leads with 1070 points. Nolte is in second with 1020 points and Buckwitz is in third place with 946 points.
This was the third podium finish of the season for Appiah. She previously won the silver medal in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada on November 25, and a bronze medal in Park City, Utah, United States on December 2. The bronze medal will give Appiah confidence as she prepares for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
