Canada to participate at the 2022 Davis Cup

Even though Canada did not initially qualify for the 2022 Davis Cup in the fall, they will now be participating. That is because the International Tennis Federation has suspended Russia from the tournament because of its invasion of Ukraine.

Canada attempted to qualify for the 2022 Davis Cup earlier this month, but lost to the Netherlands. However, due to the fact they were the highest seed from the 2021 Davis Cup not participating in 2022, they qualified as a lucky loser according to the Canadian Press on Thursday.

We do not know at this time where Canada will play. We do know that Canada will be placed in one of four groups on the weekend from September 14-18, 2022. The top two countries from each group will advance to the knockout stage from November 23-27, 2022. The four venues for the group stage are Glasgow, Scotland; Bologna, Italy; Hamburg, Germany; and Malaga, Spain.

Canadian tennis fans will hope they will be sending a much stronger and formidable group than what was sent to the Davis Cup qualifier in The Hague. Canada was without Denis Shapovalov for an undisclosed reason. Vasek Pospisil was participating in a lower-ranked ITF event, while Milos Raonic and Felix Auger-Aliassime were not participating due to injuries.
