Brad Gushue of St. John’s, Newfoundland has skipped Team Canada to the semifinals of the Olympic men’s curling competition at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. Despite falling to a record of five wins and four losses after a 5-3 loss to the Russian Olympic Committee, Canada has reached the final four after results went their way on the Wednesday draw from Beijing.
Canada was able to clinch a spot after Great Britain beat the Russian Olympic Committee 8-6, and China beat Switzerland 6-5. The Canadians are joined in the playoffs by Great Britain and Sweden. The United States could join them if they beat Denmark on Wednesday evening in Canada (6 p.m. MT). An American loss and that means a team at 4-5 will make the playoffs. That could be the United States, the Russian Olympic Committee or Norway.
Speaking of beating Denmark, that is what the Canadian women need to do in the final draw in women’s curling. They will also need some help to get into the semifinals with a possible record of five wins and four losses. In a crazy scenario, Canada must beat Denmark and either have Great Britain and South Korea both win or both lose or have Japan beat Switzerland. Great Britain plays the Russian Olympic Committee and South Korea plays Sweden.
In other team sports, Canada was eliminated in men’s hockey on Wednesday following a 2-0 loss to Sweden. In the semifinals, Slovakia plays Finland and the Russian Olympic Committee plays Sweden.
