For the fifth time, Canada has won the gold medal in women’s hockey at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. On Wednesday evening in Canada, and Thursday afternoon in Beijing, Canada defeated the United States 3-2 in the gold medal game. Canada previously won the gold medal at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
In the gold medal contest, Canada had two goals from Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Quebec and another from Sarah Nurse from Hamilton, Ontario. Poulin also had an assist on the goal by Nurse, and Nurse had an assist on the game-winning goal by Poulin at 9:08 of the second period.
Nurse broke the records for most points by a women’s hockey player at an Olympic Winter Games with 18 and most assists by a women’s hockey player at an Olympic Winter Games with 13. She broke the records previously set by Hayley Wickenheiser of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, who had 12 assists and 17 points at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin. Poulin meanwhile also had 17 points in Beijing.
Team Canada also set a record for most goals in a women’s hockey tournament at an Olympic Winter Games with 57. The previous record was 48 goals, which Canada scored at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
In addition to Nurse and Poulin, the other Canadian women’s hockey players to win Olympic gold were Erin Ambrose of Keswick, Ontario; Ashton Bell of Deloraine, Manitoba; Kristen Campbell of Brandon, Manitoba; Emily Clark of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Quebec; Ann-Renee Desbiens of La Malbaie, Quebec, Renata Fast of Hamilton, Ontario; Sarah Fillier of Georgetown, Ontario; Brianne Jenner of Oakville, Ontario; Rebecca Johnston of Sudbury, Ontario; Jocelyne Larocque of Ste. Anne, Manitoba; Emma Maltais of Burlington, Ontario; Emerance Maschmeyer of Bruderheim, Alberta; Jamie Lee Rattray of Kanata, Ontario; Jill Saulnier of Halifax, Nova Scotia; Ella Shelton of Ingersoil, Ontario; Natalie Spooner of Scarborough, Ontario; Laura Stacey of Mississauga, Ontario; Claire Thompson of Toronto, Ontario; Blayre Turnbull of Stellarton, Nova Scotia, and Micah Zandee-Hart of Saanichton, British Columbia. Zandee-Hart was the only player on the Olympic team that did not win a gold at the 2021 Women’s World Hockey Championship in Calgary. Finland meanwhile won the Olympic bronze medal following a 4-0 win over Switzerland.
In other hockey news, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sidney Crosby of Halifax, Nova Scotia scored his 500th career NHL goal on Tuesday as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-4 in overtime. Darcy Kuemper of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is red hot as he had his second straight shutout on Wednesday as the Colorado Avalanche blanked the Vegas Golden Knights 2-0. Meanwhile, Mark Scheifele of Kitchener, Ontario notched a hat trick on Wednesday in a 6-3 Winnipeg win over Minnesota.
