Canada pounds Colombia 22-2 at the Women’s World Water Polo Championships

Team Canada has won their first game of the 2022 Women’s World Water Polo Championship in Budapest, Hungary. After tying their first game against Italy 7-7 on Monday, Canada rebounded with a 22-2 win over Colombia on Wednesday.

Eight different Canadians scored in the 20-goal Canadian win. Hayley McKelvey of Surrey, British Columbia led the Canadian team with five goals. Verica Bakoc of Toronto, Ontario scored four goals, while Kyra Christmas of High River, Alberta, and Axelle Crevier of Montreal, Quebec had three goals each. Emma Wright of Lindsay, Ontario, Gurpreet Sohi of White Rock, British Columbia and Amanda Amorosa of Montreal had two goals each. Finally, Rae Lekness of Calgary, Alberta scored one goal. McKelvey and Christmas led Canada with three assists each.

Team Canada scored on 58% of their shots in the game, as they had 38 shots on goal. It has been a tough tournament for Colombia to date as they were beaten 35-4 by Hungary on Monday. The Hungarians are the host team of the 2022 Women’s Water Polo Championship, and will play Canada on Friday.

Despite clobbering Colombia 35-4 on Monday, Hungary actually lost 10-9 to Italy on Wednesday. In Group A action, Canada actually finds themselves all alone in first place with a record of one win and one tie. They are tied with the Italians with three points, but Canada is in first at this time as they have a goals for and against differential of +20, while Italy is only at +1.
