The Edmonton Oil Kings are in the win column at the 2022 Memorial Cup in St. John, New Brunswick and a major reason why was because of the offensive prowess of right winger Jaxsen Wiebe of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
Wiebe not only registered a hat trick, but the overtime winner as well as the Oil Kings defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs 4-3. Wiebe opened the scoring at 2:14 of the first period on the power play from Carter Souch and Luke Prokop. Souch and Prokop are each from Edmonton, Alberta. Wiebe then tied the game at three from Jalen Luypen of Kelowna, British Columbia and Souch at 2:05 of the second period which tied the game at three. After a third period without a goal, Wiebe scored the overtime winner in three-on-three action from Justin Sourdif of Surrey, British Columbia and Kaiden Guhle of Sherwood Park, Alberta at 8:05 of the extra period.
Wiebe was one of three Oil Kings players with a multi-point game. Souch had one goal and one assist for two points and Sourdif had two assists.
With the win, the Oil Kings improved to a record of one win and one loss. However, they only get two points for the win instead of three, because they won in extra time. The Sea Dogs are also 1-1, but have four points, as they have one win in regulation and a loss in extra time. On Thursday, Shawinigan (1-0) plays Hamilton (0-1).
