Canada beats Switzerland at Women’s World Hockey Championship

Team Canada has improved to a record of two wins and zero losses at the 2024 Women’s World Hockey Championships in Utica, New York. On Friday afternoon, Canada defeated Switzerland 3-0 thanks to a shutout performance by Canadian Olympic gold medalist Emerance Maschmeyer of Bruderheim, Alberta.

Maschmeyer made 17 saves overall. She made three saves in the first period, four saves in the second period, and 10 saves in the third period. From a shot perspective, Canada dominated Switzerland, as they outshot the Swiss 42-17.

The Canadian goal scorers were Canadian Olympic gold medalists Emma Maltais of Burlington, Ontario, Sarah Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario and Sarah Fillier of Georgetown, Ontario. Maltais, Fillier, Nurse and Maschmeyer won a gold medal for Canada at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

Canada is all alone in first place in the Group A standings at two wins and zero losses. They won their first game by a score of 4-1 over Finland. The United States and the Czech Republic are also undefeated with identical records of one win and zero losses. The United States beat Switzerland 4-0 in their opening game, while the Czech Republic beat Finland 4-0 also on Wednesday. The Czech Republic is facing the United States on Friday evening.
