Canada beats Germany in five sets at 2022 Women’s World Volleyball Championship

Team Canada advances into the second round of the 2022 Women’s World Volleyball Championships with a carryover win. On Saturday, Canada beat Germany in five sets, 12-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-18, 15-9.

The Canadians got off to a sluggish start, and looks did not look too promising after Canada lost a very tight and competitive set. However, Team Canada exemplified a significant amount of grit, determination, and resiliency. They had a never give-up attitude and mindset that played a key role to get them through.

Four Canadian players reached double digits in scoring. Alexa Gray of Lethbridge, Alberta led Canada in scoring with 25 points. Meanwhile, Kiera Van Ryk of New Westminster, British Columbia had 19 points, Hilary Howe of Calgary, Alberta had 12 points and Emily Maglio of Cranbrook, British Columbia had 10 points. Gray led Canada with 22 attack points. Howe, Maglio and Canadian captain Jennifer Cross of Scarborough, Ontario led Canada with two block points. Gray and Brie King of Langley, British Columbia had two aces each. Gray, Van Ryk and Howe are opposite hitters. King is a setter, while Maglio and Cross are middle blockers.

With the win, Team Canada has advanced to the next round of the Women’s World Volleyball Championship by being in the top four teams in their pool. They will have a record of one win and two losses after their win over Germany.
