Mackenzie Hughes and Maddie Szeryk in contention to begin October

As the golf calendar moves into October, Mackenzie Hughes of Hamilton, Ontario is in contention on the PGA Tour, and Maddie Szeryk of London, Ontario is in contention on the LPGA Tour. Hughes is in second place at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi, and Szeryk is in fifth place at the Ascendant LPGA event in The Colony, Texas.

Hughes is at -14 after a third round score of four under-par 68. He had six birdies and two bogeys. Hughes birdied the third, fifth, 11th, 13th, 14th, and 18th holes, and bogeyed the second and 17th holes.

Mark Hubbard of the United States leads at -15. Three other golfers are in contention. Garrick Higgo of South Africa, Scott Stallings of the United States and Sepp Straka of Austria were in a three-way tie for third place at -12.

Hughes is trying to be the fourth Canadian to win in Jackson. He joins Dan Halldorson of Winnipeg, Manitoba who won the 1986 Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic, Richard Zokol of Kitimat, British Columbia, who won the 1992 Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic, and Nick Taylor of Winnipeg who won the 2014 Sanderson Farms Championship.

Szeryk posted a score of four-under par 67 after recording a score of -4. She had five birdies and one bogey. Serzyk birdied the second, sixth, ninth, 10th and 15th holes, and bogeyed the fifth. Charley Hull of England and Xiyu Lin of China were tied for the lead at -11. Lydia Ko of New Zealand and Celine Boutier of France were tied for third at -10, and South Korea’s So Yeon Ryu, and Thailand’s Atthaya Thitikul and Moriya Jutanugarn were tied for sixth at -8.
