Team Canada remains undefeated at the 2024 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men’s Hockey Championships in Prague, Czech Republic. On Saturday, Canada defeated Finland 5-3 to improve their record to five wins and zero losses. However, it should be noted because Canada beat Austria 7-6 in overtime on Tuesday, they did not get a full three points there, and had to settle for only two points. Therefore, they only have 14 points overall in the tournament, instead of 15. The Czech Republic have 16 points after six games and Switzerland also has 14 points after five games.
In Canada’s win over Finland, the Canadians did not get off to a very good start. Finland took a 2-0 first period lead and had the first 12 shots of the game. However, Canada responded with two first period goals to tie the game and the last three goals of the game after Finland took a 3-2 second period lead.
Three Canadians had a multi-point game. Buffalo Sabres defenseman Owen Power of Mississauga, Ontario had one goal and two assists for three points. Sabres centre Dylan Cozens of Whitehorse, Yukon had one goal and one assist for two points and Canadian captain, Olympic gold medalist and Toronto Maple Leafs centre John Tavares of Mississauga, Ontario had two assists. Tavares won the gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. The other three Canadian goal scorers were Tampa Bay Lightning left winger Brandon Hagel of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, New Jersey Devils centre Dawson Mercer of Carbonear, Newfoundland, and Seattle Kraken left winger Brandon Tanev of Toronto, Ontario.
