Canadian Olympic gold medalist Matt Duchene of Haliburton, Ontario scored his third National Hockey League Stanley Cup Playoff overtime winner. He accomplished the feat for the Dallas Stars on Friday at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado in game six of the Western Conference semifinal series. Duchene’s overtime winner clinched the series as the Stars beat the Colorado Avalanche four games to two in the best out of seven series and 2-1 in the game.
Duchene’s game-winning goal on Friday came at 11:42 of double overtime. Joe Pavelski picked up the lone assist.
In the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Duchene has two goals and four assists for six points. He is a +2 with four penalty minutes, one power-play goal, 18 shots on goal, 55 faceoff wins, 13 blocked shots, 16 hits, nine takeaways, and 12 giveaways. Duchene’s other playoff goal in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs came in game five of the first round, a 3-2 Stars win over the Vegas Golden Knights. He scored from Wyatt Johnston of Toronto, Ontario and Tyler Seguin of Brampton, Ontario in an all-Canadian goal on the power-play on May 1.
Duchene’s first two career Stanley Cup Playoff overtime winners also came in double overtime. The first was on April 27, 2019 in a 3-2 Columbus Blue Jackets win over the Boston Bruins in game two of the Eastern Conference second round series. Duchene scored from Artemi Panarin and Cam Atkinson at 3:42 of the second overtime period on the power-play. The second was on May 21, 2021 in a 5-4 Nashville Predators win over the Carolina Hurricanes in game three of the first round of the playoffs. Ducnene scored from defenseman Alexandre Carrier of Quebec City, Quebec and Roman Josi at 14:54 of period number two.
