
It was a very successful weekend for Canadian athletes at four World Cup ski cross competitions in Idre Fjall, Sweden over the last 48 hours. In all, Canadian skiers won six medals (two gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals).
Canadian Olympic silver medalist Brittany Phelan of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec won the gold medal on Friday and the bronze medal on Saturday in the women’s events. Reece Howden of Chilliwack, British Columbia won the bronze medal on Friday and the silver medal on Saturday in the men’s events. India Sherret of Cranbrook, British Columbia won the silver medal on Friday, and Canadian Olympic gold medalist Marielle Thompson of North Vancouver won the gold medal on Saturday. Phelan won the silver medal for Canada in women’s ski cross at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, and Thompson won the gold medal for Canada in women’s ski cross at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
In the men’s ski cross event on Friday, Howden finished behind gold medalist David Mobaerg of Sweden and silver medalist Simone Deromedis of Italy. In the men’s ski cross event on Saturday, Howden finished behind gold medalist David Mobaerg of Sweden, and ahead of Erik Mobaerg of Sweden. In the women’s ski cross event on Friday, Saskja Lack of Switzerland won bronze, and in the women’s ski cross event on Saturday, Marielle Beger Sabbatel of France won silver.
In the men’s World Cup ski cross standings, Howden finished in second place with 721 points. David Mobaerg is the World Cup champion with 780 points. In the women’s World Cup ski cross standings, Thompson won the Crystal Globe with 1077 points. Phelan finished in third place with 934 points and Sherret finished in sixth place with 605 points. The medals for Phelan, Howden, Thompson and Sherret will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
