The 2022 Canada Games got under way on Sunday after an opening ceremonies in Niagara Falls, Ontario on Saturday. After two days of competition, the most interesting news is the fact that British Columbia leads the overall medal standings with 19 despite the fact they only have one gold medal.
The gold medal came in the female sprint triathlon. Colette Reimer of Victoria, British Columbia placed first on Monday with an overall time of 1:06:16. Anja Krueger of East St. Paul, Manitoba won the silver medal with an overall time of 1:06:32. Sophia Howell of Airdrie, Alberta won the bronze medal with an overall time of 1:06:41.
In swimming, there have been three multi-gold medalists so far. Connor Bissett of Edmonton, Alberta won the gold medal in the Special Olympics division in the men’s 50 meter breaststroke and men’s 100 metre freestyle. Reid Maxwell of St. Albert, Alberta won the gold medal in the men’s 100 metre para freestyle and 400 metre para freestyle division. Katie Cosgriffe of Burlington, Ontario won the gold medal in the women’s 100 metre and 400 metre para freestyle division. Maxwell was born without a lower right leg. Cosgriffe meanwhile has Charcot-Marie-Tooth, which is a progressive neurological disease, and causes loss of functions in the hands, feet, arms, and legs.
