
Brendan Mackay of Calgary, Alberta and Canadian Olympic gold medalist Cassie Sharpe of Calgary each won medals on Saturday at a World Cup halfpipe skiing event in Copper Mountain, California. Mackay won the silver medal in the men’s World Cup ski cross event and Sharpe won the bronze medal in the women’s World Cup ski cross event.
Mackay posted a second place score of 91.25 points. Alex Ferreira of the United States won the gold medal with 94.75 points. Nicholas Goepper won the bronze medal with 89.25 points. Mackay reached the podium by 3.5 points over Finley Melville Ives of New Zealand, who had a fourth place score of 87.75 points.
Sharpe posted a third place score of 89 points. Ailing Eileen Gu of China won the gold medal with 90.5 points. Zoe Atkin of Great Britain won the silver medal with 89.75 points. Sharpe reached the podium by 3.25 points. Svea Irving of the United States was in fourth place with 85.75 points.
In the World Cup men’s halfpipe skiing standings, Mackay is in second with 230 points. Ferreira leads with 260 points. In the World Cup women’s halfpipe skiing standings, Sharpe is in sixth place with 120 points. Gu leads with 300 points.
Mackay now has 11 World Cup medals (three gold, seven silver and one bronze). Earlier this season, Mackay won the gold medal in Cardrona, New Zealand on September 9. Sharpe now has 10 World Cup medals (eight gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal).
Sharpe won the gold medal in women’s halfpipe skiing at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. The World Cup medals for Mackay and Sharpe will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
