
Seattle Kraken defenseman Brandon Montour of Brantford, Ontario notched his first career National Hockey League hat trick on Tuesday. The hat trick was actually a natural hat trick and came in an 8-2 Kraken romp over the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec.
Montour’s first goal was on the power-play at 1:32 of the second period. Chandler Stephenson of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Oliver Bjorkstrand picked up the assists. At the time, the Kraken went up 5-1. Montour then scored the only other goal in the middle frame at 8:44 of the second period from defenseman Jamie Oleksiak of Toronto, Ontario, and centre Jaden Schwartz of Wilcox, Saskatchewan on an all-Canadian goal. Seattle went up 6-1 at the time. Then, Montour registered a hat trick on an all-Canadian goal on the power-play from Stephenson and Jared McCann of Stratford, Ontario to put the Kraken up 7-1.
Montour was one of four Canadians to score against the Canadiens. The other three were Oleksiak, Schwartz and Ryker Evans of Calgary, Alberta. In all, five Canadians had a multi-point game for Seattle. Montour and Stephenson had four points each. Montour had three goals and one assist, and Stephenson had four assists. Schwartz had one goal and two assists for three points, Oleksiak had one goal and one assist for two points, and McCann had two assists.
In 2024-25, Montour has four goals and five assists for nine points in 10 games. He is a +3 with 10 penalty minutes, three power-play points, 33 shots on goal, 11 blocked shots, 19 hits, three takeaways, and 14 giveaways.
This is the third time in Kraken franchise history there has been a hat trick. Captain Jordan Eberle of Regina, Saskatchewan scored thrice in a 5-2 Kraken win over the Buffalo Sabres on November 4, 2021, and McCann scored thrice in an 8-5 Seattle win over the Chicago Blackhawks on January 14, 2023. Montour is the first defenseman this season and the first defenseman in Kraken history to get a hat trick.
With the win, the Kraken improve to a record of five wins, four losses, and one loss in extra time for 11 points. They are in fifth place in the Pacific Division.
