The Toronto Blue Jays began their 2022 Major League Baseball season on Friday, while the Toronto Raptors were just finishing their National Basketball Association season as they played game number 81 of 82 before they head to the postseason. However on one night in the Ontario capital, Toronto fans rejoiced by watching comebacks for the ages.
Let’s get to the Blue Jays first. They were down 7-0 in the fourth inning before coming back to win 10-8. Yes, it was only one game, but this one game out of 162 and can be used as a momentum builder moving forward. The seven-run comeback was the third largest comeback on Opening Day in Major League Baseball history since 1901.
The Blue Jays got home runs from Teoscar Hernandez and Danny Jansen. Hernandez’s home run was a three-run shot in the fifth inning that tied the game up at seven. Hernandez then scored the game-winning run on a Lourdes Gurriel Jr. double in the seventh inning.
The Raptors meanwhile had their third largest comeback in franchise history according to Griffin Porter of the Canadian Press. They were once down 53-29 to the Houston Rockets before coming back to win 117-115 on a Gary Trent Jr. jump shot with 4.8 seconds left. Pascal Siakam had a double-double with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Three more Raptors reached double digits in scoring as Trent Jr. had 26 points, Scottie Barnes had 16 points and Thaddeus Young had 14 points. Toronto is now at 48 wins and 33 losses and has clinched the fifth seed in the East.
