Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario reached the final of the Rosmalen Open on Sunday. It was her first Women’s Tennis Association Final in two years, and seventh WTA Final of her career. Andreescu ended up losing 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to Liudmila Samsonova of Russia, the tournament’s second seed.
Andreescu reached the final after defeating Hungary’s Dalma Galfi 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals on Saturday. This was considered a minor upset. Galfi is ranked 120th in the world, and Andreescu is ranked 163rd.
In the semifinal, Andreescu had the edge when it came to the return of serve. She broke Galfi four times in five opportunities, while Galfi had four break point opportunities herself, but only broke Andreescu once.
Andreescu’s three WTA titles came in a magical 2019 season, which led to her winning the Northern Star Award and Bobbie Rosenfeld Award. That is when she won Indian Wells, the Canadian Open in Toronto, and the United States Open. When Andreescu beat Serena Williams of the United States 6-3, 7-5 in the final of Flushing Meadows, New York, she made Canadian tennis history as the first ever Canadian to win a grand slam singles title. Andreescu’s other grand slam finals came at the 2019 Auckland Open in New Zealand. the 2021 Miami Open, and the 2022 Bad Homburg Open in Germany.
