BC has statement win on opening night of 2025 Scotties Tournament of Hearts

Corryn Brown (X)

The 2025 Scotties Tournament of Hearts commenced on Friday night from Thunder Bay, Ontario. One of the most impressive performances of the first draw came from British Columbia’s Corryn Brown.

Brown, a native of Kamloops, defeated Selena Sturmay of Edmonton 11-4. Sturmay was not a provincial champion, and qualified for the event based on the Canadian Team Ranking Standings from 2023-24.

It was quite the challenge for Team BC to actually get to Thunder Bay. In fact, it took them three days. Once they got on the ice, they were by far the best team. Brown got off to a fast start as she got three points in the second end and two points in the fourth end. Brown then had an excellent finish as she stole two points in the eighth end and ninth ends.

Brown only skipped 76%, but that was 16% better than Sturmay. Meanwhile, Sarah Koltun of Whitehorse, Yukon, has joined Brown at the second position. She had spent seven years playing on Team Northwest Territories for Kerry Galusha. On Friday, Koltun was exceptional, as she curled 93%.

The other intriguing game saw Saskatchewan beat Northern Ontario 10-6. Saskatchewan skip Nancy Martin, who is skipping at the Scotties for the first time at age 51, scored three points each in the second and 10th ends. Canada beat Prince Edward Island 13-4 and Alberta beat New Brunswick 8-4 in other action.
