Canada was represented in the 2022 NBA All-Star Game in Cleveland on Sunday, as Andrew Wiggins of Toronto, Ontario was a starting forward for Team Durant in a 163-160 loss to Team LeBron. In 15 minutes in a starting role, Wiggins had 10 points and one assist.
Wiggins was one of two players in the game with a Canadian connection. Fred VanVleet of the Toronto Raptors also participated. In nine minutes, VanVleet had six points, three assists and two rebounds.
This was Wiggins’s first All-Star Game in his eight-year NBA career. In 54 games this season, he is averaging 17.7 points per game, 4.2 rebounds per game, and 2.1 assists per game, with a career-high .481 field goal percentage, career-high .414 three-point percentage, and a .661 free throw percentage.
You might be wondering why Wiggins was selected an All-Star when he is below his career average of 19.4 points per game this season. The best answer is the fact that Wiggins is on a very talented Golden State Warriors team, which also consists of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. So, even though Wiggins’ offensive production might somewhat be down, he has been instrumental in leading the Warriors to a more important statistic–team victories. Golden State is currently second in the West at 42 wins and 17 losses.
