According to fencingtimelive.com, Alexanne Verret of Quebec City, Quebec won the bronze medal at a Fencing World Cup in Vancouver, British Columbia on Thursday. Verret, who was a graduate in accounting from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio in 2021, won her first career World Cup medal.
Verret shared the bronze medal with Anna Kun of Hungary. Giulia Rizzi of Italy won the gold medal and Man Wai Vivian Kong of Hong Kong won the silver medal. Verret defeated Injeong Choi of South Korea 15-11 in the first round, Laurence Epee of France 15-9 in the second round, Nozomi Sato of Japan 8-7 in the round of 16, and Dzhoan Feybi Bezhura of Ukraine 15-12 in the quarterfinals, before losing to Kong 15-8 in the semifinals.
The fact that Verret beat Choi is significant and a major upset. Choi has won two silver medals in the women’s team competition at the Olympic Games. The first came at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and the second came at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. Verret is currently ranked 34th in the world, while Choi is ranked second in the world behind Sera Song of South Korea. The bronze medal for Verret will give her confidence as she prepares to represent Canada at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
