Edmonton Elks kicker Vincent Blanchard of Quebec City, Quebec made Canadian Football League history on Saturday. Blanchard set the CFL record for most field goals made in a game (nine) in a 37-35 Elks overtime win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta according to threedownnation.com.
Blanchard made two field goals each from 40 yards and 37 yards, and one field goal from 22 yards, 54 yards, 25 yards, 27 yards, and 35 yards. He scored 12 points for the Elks from four field goals in the second quarter and had the only scoring in the game in the second quarter. Blanchard also kicked two key field goals in overtime.
Four kickers had the old record with eight field goals. They were Dave Ridgeway of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Mark McLoughlin of the Calgary Stampeders, Paul Osbaldiston of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Lirim Hajrullahu of the Toronto Argonauts. Ridgeway of Burlington, Ontario accomplished the feat twice. The first time came on July 29, 1984 in a 46-24 Roughiders win over the Ottawa Rough Riders. The second came on July 23, 1988 in a 26-15 Roughriders win over the Edmonton Eskimos. McLoughlin of Winnipeg, Manitoba had eight field goals for the Stampeders on August 5, 1996 in a 38-11 Stampeders win over the Roughriders. Osbaldiston of Kamloops, British Columbia had eight field goals for the Tiger-Cats on September 22, 1996 in a 24-21 win over the Rough Riders, and Hajrullahu of St. Catharines, Ontario had eight field goals for the Argonauts on September 28, 2024 in a 37-31 Toronto win over the Montreal Alouettes.
For the season, Blanchard has made 50 of 53 field goals and 36 of 39 converts. The Elks continue to lead the West Division at 11 wins and four losses. With the loss, the Tiger-Cats have been eliminated from the postseason.
