
Dallas Stars centre Tyler Seguin of Brampton, Ontario scored his second National Hockey League overtime winner in his career on Wednesday night. He accomplished the feat in a 2-1 Stars win over the Colorado Avalanche in game three of the first round Western Conference playoff series from the Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado. With the win, the Stars lead the best out of seven series two games to one.
Seguin’s overtime winner came from Mason Marchment of Uxbridge, Ontario and Mikko Rantanen at 5:31 of the extra period. Seguin was one of two Canadians to score for the Stars. Canadian Olympic gold medalist Jamie Benn of Victoria, British Columbia tied the game at 9:18 of the third period. Benn won a gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
In 2024-25, Seguin missed the majority of the season due to hip surgery. He only played one regular season game since December 1 prior to the playoffs. In 20 regular season games, Seguin had nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points. He was a +15 with four penalty minutes, three power-play points, two game-winning goals, 46 shots on goal, 92 faceoff wins, six blocked shots, five hits, four takeaways, and 13 giveaways.
Seguin’s first game-winning goal of the 2024-25 regular season came on October 12 in a 3-0 Stars win over the New York Islanders. Seguin opened the scoring from Marchment and Matt Duchene of Haliburton, Ontario at 7:59 of the first period. Seguin’s second game-winning goal came on November 7 in a 3-1 Stars win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Seguin scored from Sam Steel of Edmonton, Alberta and defenseman Nils Lundkvist at 10:15 of the second period to put the Stars up 2-0.
The first Stanley Cup playoff overtime winner for Seguin came on April 22, 2012 in a 4-3 Boston Bruins win over the Washington Capitals. Seguin scored from Milan Lucic of Vancouver, British Columbia and David Krejci at 3:17 of the extra period in game six of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
