Tre Ford of the University of Waterloo Warriors won the 2021 Hec Crighton Award on Thursday. The award is presented to the most outstanding player in Canadian University Football.

Ford is a native of Niagara Falls, Ontario. He not only became the first football player ever from the University of Waterloo to win the award, but the first black quarterback to ever receive the honour as well according to CBC Sports.

In six regular season games in the Ontario University Athletics, Ford completed 118 passes in 186 attempts for 1465 yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also had 59 rushes for 629 rushing yards. What made Ford’s season even more noteworthy is the fact he was in the top 10 in passing yards and rushing yards.

Ford had a season-high 356 passing yards on October 2, in a 34-13 Warriors loss to McMaster University. He then had a season-high 176 rushing yards on October 16 in a 27-10 loss to the University of Guelph Gryphons.

The Warriors also made the OUA West Division semifinals with a record of three wins and three losses. Their 150 regular season points were third in the conference, only behind the University of Western Ontario Mustangs, which had 295 points, and the Queen’s University Golden Gaels, which had 172 points. The Warriors lost 51-24 to the Mustangs in the first round of the OUA playoffs.
