Three Canadians are in the third round of the 2022 United States Open. In the women’s draw, 2019 U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario and Rebecca Marino of Toronto, Ontario are in the round of 32. In the men’s draw, Denis Shapovalov of Toronto is in the third round.

Andreescu beat a seeded player in the second round on Wednesday in Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil, the 15th ranked player. Haddad Maia has had a big summer as she reached the final of the 2022 National Bank Open in Toronto before losing to Simona Halep of Romania, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. One reason for Andreescu’s win came down to double faults. Andreescu only had one, while Haddad Maia had six.

Andreescu’s win over Haddad Maia came after beating Harmony Tan of France in round one, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. Tan made headlines earlier this summer when she beat Serena Williams of the United States in the first round of Wimbledon, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6, en route to reaching the fourth round.

Andreescu will now face Caroline Garcia of France, the 17th seed, on Friday. Garcia is red hot as she won the Cincinnati Masters leading up to the U.S. Open. Head-to-head, Garcia won their only meeting, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, in the final of Bad Homborg, Germany earlier this year.

Marino beat Daria Snigur of Ukraine 6-3, 7-5 in round two on Wednesday. A major reason for Marino’s win was the fact she had 13 aces compared to Snigur’s one. Snigur’s first round win came over Halep, the 2018 French Open champion, and 2019 Wimbledon champion. Halep was coming into Flushing Meadows in top form as she won the 2022 National Bank Open, but lost in round one, 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 to Snigur.

Marino’s first round win came over Magdalena Frech of Poland, 6-2, 6-3. Marino will next face doubles specialist Shuai Zhang of China. This will be their first career meeting.

Shapovalov beat Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain in round two, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. The serve was the major reason for Shapovalov’s win as he had 11 aces, while Carballes Baena only had one. Shapovalov beat Marc-Andrea Huesler of Switzerland in round one, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

Shapovalov will next face the ninth seed, Andrey Rublev of Russia in round three on Saturday. Head-to-head Shapovalov and Rublev are 2-2 against each other.
