After one season where the six teams in the Professional Women’s Hockey League did not have a team name, things are about to change for the 2024-25 season. Ottawa will now be known as the Ottawa Charge, Montreal will be known as the Montreal Victoire, and Toronto will be known as the Toronto Sceptres. The three American teams will be known as the New York Sirens, Boston Fleet and Minnesota Frost.
In other PWHL news, Greg Fargo of Kingston, Ontario has been named the new head coach of the Sirens. He takes over from Howie Draper of Edmonton, Alberta, who is returning to coach the University of Alberta Pandas. Draper has the distinction of having the record for the most head coaching wins at the Canadian University level in women’s hockey with 667.
Meanwhile, five players have changed teams in PWHL free agency since June 21. They are Daryl Watts of Toronto, Ontario (signed with Toronto after being with Ottawa), Emma Woods of Burford, Ontario (signed with Toronto after being with New York), Rebecca Leslie of Ottawa, Ontario (signed with Ottawa after being with Toronto), Alexa Vasko of St. Catherines, Ontario (signed with Ottawa after being with Toronto), and Emma Greco (signed with Boston after being with Minnesota).
