Heading into the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, there was an opinion made by many, including yours truly, that Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario could win up to six Olympic medals. After Saturday, she is now at five medals, with a genuine feeling McIntosh could be at six if Canadian coaches decide to put McIntosh in the pool for Sunday’s final.
However, before we jump ahead and look at tomorrow, it is important to look back at the continued brilliant swimming of McIntosh. On Saturday, she became the first Canadian ever to win three Olympic gold medals at a single Olympic Games according to Donna Spencer of the Canadian Press. McIntosh’s other two gold medals in Paris came in the women’s 400 metre individual medley, and the women’s 200 metre butterfly.
McIntosh’s gold medal winning swim on Saturday came in a time of 2:06.56, an Olympic record. McIntosh reached the podium by 1.93 seconds. Yu Yiting of China finished in fourth place with a time of 2:08.49. Kate Douglass of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 2:06.92. Kaylee McKeown of Australia won the bronze medal with a time of 2:08.08. American Alexandra Walsh originally won the bronze medal, but was soon disqualified for starting to change disciplines before touching the wall.
Canada now has 15 medals (four gold medals, four silver medals and seven bronze medals). That its ninth in the overall standings.
