Summer McIntosh named World Aquatics Female Swimmer of the Year

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario has been named the World Aquatics Female Swimmer of the Year. McIntosh was honoured for her dominance at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, at the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Budapest, and breaking the world record in the women’s 400 metre individual medley at the Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials in Toronto with a time of 4:24.38.

McIntosh’s Olympic gold medals in Paris came in the women’s 200 metre butterfly, women’s 200 metre individual medley, and women’s 400 metre individual medley. She also won silver in the women’s 400 metre freestyle.

Then at the 2024 World Short Course Swimming Championships that concluded in Budapest on Sunday, McIntosh won five medals during the event (three gold, one silver, and one bronze). She placed first in the women’s 200 metre butterfly, women’s 400 metre freestyle, and women’s 400 metre individual medley. McIntosh also won a silver medal in the women’s 200 metre backstroke and a bronze in the women’s 4×100 metre freestyle. McIntosh also set three short course world records in Budapest (1:59.32 in women’s 200 metre butterfly, 3:50.25 in the women’s 400 metre freestyle, and 4:15.48 in the women’s 400 metre individual medley).

In all, Canadian swimmers won 15 medals in Budapest. They won four gold medals, five silver medals and six bronze medals. Only the United States won more medals as they won 39.
